HarperCollins publishers acquires world rights to Molly’s Game official movie tie in

HarperCollins Publishers has acquired world rights for the film tie-in edition of Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street’s Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker, a memoir by Molly Bloom, soon to be a major motion picture starring Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, and written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, in his directorial debut.

The book will be published by HarperCollins in nine markets and five languages starting with the US, Canada and Australia in October and the UK in December. From there it will roll out to France, Spain, Japan, Holland, and Poland over the coming year.

The deal was originally negotiated by Carrie Thornton, Editorial Director of Dey Street Books with Lisa Gallagher at Defiore and Company. Tom Killingbeck, Editor at Collins recently acquired UK Commonwealth Rights.

In this gripping memoir, Molly Bloom reveals how she formed the most exclusive, elite, high-stakes underground poker game the world had ever seen – an insider’s story of excess and danger, glamour and greed. In the late 2000s, Molly Bloom ran the highest stakes, most exclusive poker game in existence. Hundreds of millions of dollars were won and lost at her table. Molly’s game became the game for those in the know-celebrities, business moguls and millionaires – until it all came crashing down around her and she lost everything.

Molly’s Game is a behind-the-scenes look at the life she created, the life she lost, and what she learnt in the process.

Carrie Thornton says: “Molly’s book was the first I acquired when I came to HarperCollins. I am thrilled to see this incredible tale get the big screen treatment with such high calibre talent as Aaron Sorkin, Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain. I have come to know Molly Bloom well in the years since she was the «Poker Princess,» and I know the film will capture the tenacity, bravery, and intelligence that it took for this ordinary girl from Loveland, Colorado to transform herself. Her memoir is a wonderful story of what happens when your life spirals out of your control, and it is the strength of your character and the love of your family that brings you back to reality.”

Tom Killingbeck says: “Cinema audiences may assume Molly Bloom to be an outlandish fictional creation, but I can assure readers that she is a real person, and her book is based on real events. As a riotously entertaining memoir that charts a tightrope walk between the high life and the low life, Molly’s Game is up there with The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort and Catch Me If You Can by Frank W. Abagnale, but Molly’s story is tempered with a lot of heart. I can’t wait to publish it in the UK this Christmas alongside Aaron Sorkin’s hugely exciting film adaptation.”

Molly Bloom says: «Living this story was an extraordinary, sometimes challenging, experience; being able to write and publish the book has been a great honor; now seeing the book brought beautifully and brilliantly to life by Aaron – with so much heart and humanity – is beyond anything I could ever have imagined.»
